Today I’ll pay tribute to one of my bass heroes: Jimmy Johnson.
His versatility always amazes me, he plays smooth jazz with his band Flim and the Bb´s, he keep the groove with James Taylor and always keep the group together under complex harmonies with Allan Holdsworth .
He has unique voice on the instrument, very melodic solos and solid groove, a true innovator in a 5 strings bass.
I chose this track from Allan Holdsworth´s secrets, because it shows his ability to keep a groove, but always adding some melodic phrases and fills.
Mention apart is the drummer Vinnie Colaiuta on this record, they interact a lot in this track, making sense to the word “playing”.
About the chart, I spent some time trying to figure out the articulations, pay special attention to the slides, bends, staccatos, appoggiaturas, note muting and fast triplets in higher registers.
See you in my next post
